The previous research campaigns have completed examination of the designated landscape, archaeological sites and collections in order to create a database of stone sculpture, which forms the basis for further research to be carried out in an interdisciplinary approach. The work on the project is designed through four work packages in collaboration with partner institutions. In the first, the material-stone will be analyzed, i.e. laboratory and microscopic processing and mineralogical-petrographic analysis of samples of selected stone specimens. Based on the obtained results, the origin of the stone will be determined and a possible affiliation to workshops will be established. Within this framework, trade routes and directions of migration of stone carvers or the transfer of influences, ideas and motifs will be marked, which will contribute to determining the time and elucidating the context of the creation of the analyzed fragments. In the second, art-historical problems will be tackled – formal, morphological, and iconographic analyses in comparison with monuments of the nearby regions. The third WP will handle iconological and historiographical research on sculpture as a bearer of “memory”, i.e. the content, meaning and role that these art forms have had in the broader formation of cultural, historical and identity processes. The fourth package will work on the “communication” aspects. In cooperation with partner institutions 3 virtual exhibitions will be prepared that will present the selected material in a reconstructed original virtual reality and process it using specific visual perception algorithms. All four work packages will contribute to the goals of the project, which will ultimately complement our knowledge of the early medieval period of the northern Adriatic using methodologies from several scientific disciplines and will produce new knowledge more easily accessible to the scientific and wider community.

Research team

A multidisciplinary collaborative research team involves experts from different fields working together on a shared objective, with each member contributing from their distinct discipline.

Prof. Marina Vicelja-Matijašić (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, Department of Art History), project leader, will coordinate the activities on the project, and in terms of research, will be responsible for the contextual, historiographic and iconological analysis of the sculptural material. She is particularly interested in studying the memory and communication value of the sculptural opus, in order to position this corpus in a broader cultural and professional European framework.

Assoc. Prof. Danko Dujmović (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, Department of Art History), project vice-leader, will participate in researching the connection between sculpture of North Adriatic and the Central European regions, in collecting, processing and preparing data for the digital database and in preparing planned virtual exhibitions. He will carry out activities related to the popularization of the research activities and results through public lectures and educational workshops. He will coordinate activities related to the implementation of student internships within the framework of project activities.

Dr. Nikolina Belošević (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Rijeka, Department of Art History) will be responsible for coordinating the field research of the sculptural fragments, the interpretation of laboratory analyses, and determining the migration routes and context of origin of the fragments under consideration. She is also responsible for creating a digital catalog/repository of stone sculpture and will participate in the creation of virtual exhibitions.

Dr. Katarina Šprem (independent researcher, non-profit organization Petra) will compare the results of laboratory analyses of sculpture samples with data from quarries, in order to determine the exact locations of the exploitation of the raw material used to make selected fragments of the sculpture. Her contribution is also expected in the study of workshop activities and the directions of migration of influences, motifs, stone materials, ideas, messages and craftsmen in the northern Adriatic in the early middle ages.

Dr. Dunja Martić Štefan (Archaeological Museum in Pula) will participate in field and archival research, as well as in modelling of interpretation strategies in creation of virtual content envisaged by the project. She will also participate in the preparation and design of virtual exhibitions of the project.

Assoc. Prof. Uroš Barudžija (Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum, University of Zagreb) will coordinate the stone samples analysis at LaGeMa, where 30 μm thick segments will be treated with chemicals and dyes. The samples will be analyzed using a transmitted light of the polarizing (petrographic) microscope. He will interpret the results of the micropetrographic stone analysis, the geological age and deposition environment of the samples.

Dr. Zrinko Baričević (Faculty of Biotechnology and Drug Development, University of Rijeka) will obtain records and digital images of the structure of stone samples under a powerful microscope and will conduct chemical and biosediment analyses, which are of exceptional importance for determining possible traces of paint pigments on the sculpture.

Prof. Aljoša Brajdić (Academy of Applied Arts, University of Rijeka) will be in charge of the digitalization and virtual presentation of early medieval stone sculpture at the virtual exhibitions, which includes the creation of high-quality 3D models of selected stone fragments using photogrammetry and their digital restoration. He will prepare optimized models for virtual publication on platforms such as Sketchfab and Thingiverse, which will ensure the visibility of the project and the accessibility of cultural heritage to a wider audience.

Goran Paulin (Creative Department d.o.o., Rihub; PhD student at the Faculty of Informatics and Digital Technologies, University of Rijeka) will participate in the project in creating 3D graphic models for a digital repository and virtual exhibitions, and in creating algorithm models in innovative recognition and research of stone sculpture. He will also participate in creating experimental methods for using AI in the perception of the researched material.

Antonia Žurga, MAA, is responsible for the design and maintenance of the project’s website and for the graphic design of publications, digital catalogs and other material related to the project.

About the project The project represents development and broadening of the research of the early medieval cultural heritage of the Croatian part of the northern Adriatic – the early medieval stone sculpture of Istria and the Kvarner region.
